uence the outcome of IA are drug pharmacokinetics, site of infection, host factors, and the infecting fungus characteristics, including its susceptibility to the drug. In this setting, in vitro antifungal minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination cannot reliably predict in vivo clinical outcome in a patient. In practice, while it may not always be possible to identify which patients will respond to therapy, in vitro susceptibility tests may be used to identify those who will have a decreased probability of responding. Lassl-Fl ö rl [2] recently reviewed the confl icting data, including those of experimental models of in vivo correlation of antifungal susceptibility testing results in Aspergillus spp. Three clinical studies found a tendency towards a correlation of amphotericin B (AMB) MIC with IA outcome. Only the fi rst one [3] was statistically signifi cant, the Received 6 December 2011 ; Received in fi nal revised form 11 March 2012; Accepted 6 April 2012 Correspondence: St é phane Ranque, Aix-Marseille Universit é , Parasitologie-Mycologie, Marseille, France. Morphological changes and induction of antifungal resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus due to different CO2 levels

Background and Purpose: Aspergillosis is one of the most common opportunistic fungal infections in immunocompromised and neutropenic patients. Aspergillus fumigatus (A. fumigatus) is the most common causative agent of this infection. Due to variable CO2 concentrations that pathogens are exposed to during the infection process and to understand the role of CO2, we examined the effects of various...

Amphotericin B is the wonder of today’s pharmacology science: persisting usage over seventh decades

Abstract: Despite several topical and systemic antifungal drugs are used for the treatment of fungal infection, Amphotericin B (AmB) is still one of the most common first-line choices in systemic fungal infection for over seventh decades from discovery. Amphotericin B which is belonged to the polyene group has a wide spectrum in vitro and in vivo antifungal activity. Its mechanism of antifunga...

Resistance to amphotericin B does not emerge during treatment for invasive aspergillosis.

Emergence of resistance to antifungal drugs during therapy for invasive aspergillosis has received scant attention. We recovered Aspergillus isolates from six patients with invasive aspergillosis, who were receiving amphotericin B before fungal isolation. Although isolates were susceptible to amphotericin B in vitro, none of the patients survived. The MIC of amphotericin B for isolates was simi...

Candidiasis in Pediatrics; Identification and In vitro Antifungal Susceptibility of the Clinical Isolates

Background Candida species are normal microflora of  oral cavity, vagina, and gastrointestinal  tract. They are the third most prevalent cause of pediatric health care–associated  bloodstream fungal infection. This study aimed to provide an epidemiological feature of candidiasis and also presents an antifungal susceptibility profile of clinical Candida iso...

Prior in vitro exposure to voriconazole confers resistance to amphotericin B in Aspergillus fumigatus biofilms.

Triazoles are the mainstay of treatment for aspergillosis, although resistance to these antifungal agents may be associated with treatment failure. Refractory infections often necessitate a switch to other antifungal agents, including amphotericin B (AmB), although these infections may not resolve. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of prior azole exposure on AmB sensitivity in...
